Ice speed skating: Onset of lubrication by frictional heating

چکیده
Abstract In ice speed skating, the friction between steel skate blade and stems from boundary where temperature of interface is below zero surface molecules exhibit unconventional mobility, hydrodynamic melts a thin water layer forms. An analytical solution steady-state lubrication equation shows that only plays role at tip over an extremely short contact length ice. Albeit its negligible contribution to total friction, generates enough heat melt which allows skater slide smoothly on water. It also shown precise value coefficient not important for because it works length.

Ice friction in speed skating: can klapskates reduce ice frictional loss?
PURPOSE Reducing ice friction was one of the motives for developing the klapskate. However, the magnitude of power dissipation that occurs with conventional skates when a skater plantar flexes his ankle and the tip of the blade is pressed into the ice has not been quantified previously. In this study, we examine how ice friction varies during a single stroke with conventional skates and estimat...
متن کاملEndurance in speed skating
We analyse the development of world records speed skating from 1893 to 2000 for both men and women. The historical data show that it is likely that the relation between skating speed and distance of the various events is non-linear and converges to a limit value. We pay special attention to technical innovations in speed skating, especially, the introduction of the klapskate in the 1996/1997 se...
متن کاملSlag Infiltration, Lubrication and Frictional Forces
It is essential to lubricate the shell since inadequate lubrication leads to defects in the steel product (e.g. longitudinal cracks, sticker breakouts and star cracks). The liquid layer of the slag film, formed between the shell and the mould, lubricates the newly formed shell; the lubrication increases with increasing liquid slag thickness (dl). Lubrication is usually represented by the powder...
متن کاملBoundary lubrication of heterogeneous surfaces and the onset of cavitation in frictional contacts
Surfaces can be slippery or sticky depending on surface chemistry and roughness. We demonstrate in atomistic simulations that regular and random slip patterns on a surface lead to pressure excursions within a lubricated contact that increase quadratically with decreasing contact separation. This is captured well by a simple hydrodynamic model including wall slip. We predict with this model that...
متن کاملA statistical study of ion frictional heating observed by EISCAT
Results of a statistical survey of F-region ion frictional heating are presented, a survey which is based on over 4000 h of common programme observations taken by the European incoherent scatter (EISCAT) UHF radar facility. The criterion adopted in this study for the identi®cation of ion frictional heating was that de®ned by McCrea et al., requiring an enhancement in the F-region ®eld-parallel ...
